our story

While managing a small health food store in northern VT back in 2008, I was often seen walking through the store with a bottle of kombucha in hand. Back then few brands existed, and the idea of making my own had never even entered my mind. That is until one day when a customer came bouncing through the store. She was a young woman with a vibrant smile, free flowing clothes, and wild hair. I immediately looked out the window at the car she drove up in - it was an old Subaru with a fishing rod hanging out the back window. The first words out of her mouth to me were, "You ever try making it?" I glanced down at the bottle I was holding and muttered "No." "You should try it sometime." She put her basket on the floor and strolled outside to her car. A minute after rummaging in the Subaru she returned with a SCOBY in a mason jar and handed it to me.  I offered to buy her a kombucha for her gift, but she just smiled and told me that would defeat the purpose. This culture became more than just a kind gift from a stranger - it has been the culture used in KIS Kombucha for the entirety of our business adventure, an adventure that now includes you. I never did see her again, but I often think of her and her random act of kindness when I tip a bottle of KIS and drink from it. To this day we have offered free SCOBYs to the adventurous ones in honor of that random act of kindness."

Enjoy...and Keep It Simple!
